Healthcare worker with head in hands

A new survey reveals the toll the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is taking on healthcare providers.

Three quarters of healthcare professionals attending a Hamilton Academy of Medicine medical education event in Toronto in early December told pollsters they feel burned out and fatigued by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. That’s double the number of healthcare providers who answered a similar survey in March by the Ontario Medical Association.

Medical educational services company Banty conducted the session. Company co-founder Richard Tytus, M,D., said the results indicate burnout could increase in the months ahead.

“The challenges have been immense and continuous,” Tytus said “Now that the Omicron virus has surfaced, healthcare professional burnout and fatigue will likely persist.”

The U.S. healthcare industry is already challenged with attracting up to 7 million home care workers and up to 100,000 physicians over the next decade. David Skorton, M.D., president of the Association of American Medical Colleges said earlier this year the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic could prompt healthcare providers to cut back their hours, leave the healthcare industry or retire early.
