Going to a doctor’s appointment is an inconvenience for many. Between family and work responsibilities, it can be hard to find time for your routine checkup. Reperio Health is aiming to change the experience with its newly patented biometric, home-based health screening test kit.

“You don’t have to go to a brick-and-mortar facility to do your annual wellness screening; you can do it yourself at home and avoid the hassle,” Reperio Health CEO Travis Rush told McKnight’s Home Care Daily Pulse. “There’s all kinds of things that cause a barrier which then ultimately, in many cases, leads to not doing it at all. So by being able to have this [test] delivered to you at home, we now can do this a lot easier.

How it works: Reperio’s kit, which measures health metrics such as blood pressure and glucose, is shipped to your door. Once you receive it, you take the tests, pack it back up and send it back via UPS. The kit’s patented Bluetooth technology will connect with your smartphone to provide you access to the test results in its application within 30 minutes.

“The beautiful thing about what we’re doing in relation to the existing health care market is that we’re a supplement to that service,” Rush said. “We have the ability to relieve some of the strain on the healthcare system, and allow the people that are sick to be the ones that are being cared for instead of wasting the time of healthcare professionals doing screenings of people that are perfectly healthy. That seems like a much more efficient process.”

Rush also believes the kits will provide its users a sense of autonomy in a world where care costs continue to rise. His own bad experiences with the healthcare system partly inspired the creation of the test kit. His company currently performs 3,000 tests a month; Rush expects that number to grow to 9,000 by April and 30,000 by the end of the year.

“We need to stop relying on the healthcare system to take care of us,” Rush said. “They’re doing the best they can with the insurance policies that have been put in place. But those insurance policies don’t really care about us, they care about their investors and their stock. So what we need to do is get control of this ourselves. So we can act on our own and be our own caregivers.”
