If you’re a long-term care operator and something is keeping you up at night, chances are Scott Thurman and his team are actively trying to figure out what it is and how they can help lend a financing hand.

Whether it’s debt, equity, insurance, equipment concerns or something else, Thurman and colleagues at Greystone have helped clients navigate the ups and downs of economic, regulatory and reimbursement cycles to the tune of $5 billion in healthcare financing. Recent deals include a $7.3 million Department of Housing and Urban Development-insured loan to refinance a 78-bed assisted living community in Montana and $7 million in bridge financing to refinance acquisition debt for a 137-bed assisted living community in New York.

After graduating from Portland State University in 1991 with an undergraduate degree in applied science in business administration, management and operations, Thurman went straight to work for HUD as a multi-family housing representative and information specialist. There, he was instrumental in developing the agency’s first streamlined process for refinancing apartments.

“My guiding principle, which is something I took with me when I left HUD, is that we are not doing financings for the sake of financings. We are doing this to ensure people have decent, clean and safe places to live,” says Thurman, the firm’s senior managing director and head of FHA healthcare loan production. He likens what he and his team do to financing a form of affordable housing for tenants who need it most.

Before joining Greystone in 2017, Thurman was senior managing director of FHA underwriting for ACRE Capital and held the title of chief underwriter for Walker & Dunlop and
CWCapital.
