Humana entered 2024 with a focus on promoting quality and workforce development. CenterWell Home Health has helped the company achieve its goals with big care delivery returns, the 2023 Impact Report released Monday said.

Throughout 2023, CenterWell nearly doubled its number of top-rated home health locations. In 2022, only 29% of CenterWell Home Health locations had achieved Star Ratings of 4.5 or higher. By the end of 2023, more than 56% had earned such high ratings, according to the report. The nationwide average for home health facilities’ Quality of Patient Care Star Ratings is 3.25, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service.

CenterWell also invested heavily in workforce development initiatives last year, the report noted. It deepened its partnership with Emory University to train prospective nurses and home care aides. By the end of 2023, CenterWell employed more than 14,000 clinicians, including 6,020 nurses and 1,208 home care aides.

“We go to great lengths to hire top talent, representative of the diverse regions in which we serve, to ensure our employees are able to deliver their very best: caring for their personal well-being, career growth, ensuring equitable opportunity and maintaining a culture where everyone can feel a sense of belonging,” Carolyn Tandy, Humana’s chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer and senior vice president, said in a statement.

Additionally, CenterWell introduced new home care services in 2023, including Primary Care Anywhere, which brings primary care physicians into patients’ homes for services like blood draws and vaccinations.

Other 2023 impact highlights from Humana: 94% of its Medicare Advantage members are in plans rated four stars and above. It also donated more than 250,000 meals to people in need, contributed more than $10 million to community organizations, and spent $600 million developing interoperable health data solutions, according to the report.

Care quality and workforce achievements helped CenterWell succeed even while its parent company met challenges. Humana lost $591 million in the fourth quarter of 2023. Company leaders at the time said rising medical costs and high utilization rates among members contributed to the loss.

CenterWell, meanwhile, which also includes senior primary care and pharmacy services, saw revenues grow by 14%, and the care delivery segment made $445 million in adjusted income from operations during the same period. Bruce Broussard, Humana’s president and chief executive officer, lauded CenterWell’s growth potential and clinical excellence, which helped to drive sales in 2023.
